Types of originals
After 110 years, Kroll has opened up our archive of map originals. Original cartography, captures specific moments in our history, but also is representative of how we measured, drafted, and printed these maps. This assortment of map originals is represented primarily by our own in house publications (including those of our predecessor – the Anderson Map Company), however we have chosen to offer maps by other publishers that we have acquired throughout the years.
Please note that we distinguish between different types of originals, as follows: 1) Original tracings, generally on Imperial Tracing Cloth, which constitute the foundation, in pen and ink, of the works that were represented in various print forms 2) Original blueprints, which unless noted otherwise are printed using the original form of blueprinting, i.e, the water-wash process that required paper with a “rag content” for durability (as opposed to the more modern “Diazo” or ammonia developed blueprints) 3) Original lithographs are paper prints, mostly in color, that were produced generally in quantities of hundreds or thousands for sale and distribution 4) Photostat copies were generally produced on photographic film in limited quantities
Should you be interested in inspecting any of these maps in greater detail, we would be happy to provide you with to either view a higher resolution image that can be emailed to you, or you would be welcome to visit our office and inspect the map in person.
